What does the term “Pilates” mean?

Pilates is an exercise system that works the entire body with different sequences of machines and exercises. It works the whole body, both right and left in accordance, focusing primarily on the core. The system is named after the creator himself, Joseph Pilates, a German physical trainer who developed floor exercises that evolved into what we now know as Pilates mat work.

Today’s Pilates’ regime still includes mat exercises, but it has expanded to include the Ballet Barre and Reformers – a machine developed specifically for Pilates routines. Pilates work focuses on the body’s “powerhouse” – the gathering of muscles that start two inches beneath the navel, continues two inches above the navel and wraps entirely around the front and back side of the body’s natural foundation (the core), AND the gluteus maximus, aka “booty.”

How is Pilates different from other forms of exercise?

Pilates, unlike many exercises, is non-impact and safe.  Pilates focuses on the whole body and movement is achieved by accessing the abdominal wall to protect the upper and lower back. The body is also being worked evenly so one side is not being worked harder than the other.

Pilates boosts calorie burning potential. Intermediate and advanced forms of Pilates increase the ability to burn more calories and fat as well as burning more calories throughout the day. An effective weight loss and body toning regimen can be used and incorporated with Pilates.

What is Booty Barre?

Booty Barre is a combination of aerobic dance, ballet and Pilates. It’s a fun all over body work out set to upbeat music. Barre can be done using a ballet barre, center floor, Pilates mat, and other props including resistance bands, bender balls, and more.  Its ballet and Pilates motion provides energizing music-based workouts that strengthen, tone, and stretch the whole body.  Barre work builds definition as well. These exercises will work to fatigue the inner and outer thighs and front quads, strengthening the muscles from one joint to the other.

What are the benefits of a Booty Barre class?

A Booty Barre exercise regime helps to tighten and tone the body; it also builds endurance and strengthens the cardiovascular system as well, resulting in burning more calories throughout the day. Booty Barre routines help strengthen each muscle group thoroughly – not only hitting the lower extremities, but also hitting the booty, abs, arms and back. Strengthening each muscle group creates outstanding definition. Barre works also strengthens muscles that are often underused or underdeveloped.

What is TRX?

TRX was invented by Randy Hetrick while serving as a Navy Seal. TRX stands for Total Body Resistance Exercise, and it is a suspension training bodyweight exercise regime developing strength, balance, flexibility, and core stability simultaneously. TRX suspension training leverages gravity and the user’s body weight to complete a variety of different exercises to strengthen, tone, and build endurance.

What are the benefits of TRX?

Many benefits of TRX training include accessing a change in one’s center of gravity to challenge muscles and develop body strength by utilizing functional movements and dynamic positions that can be performed standing, squatting, laying, and facing front or back hitting muscle groups from all angles. TRX is a great way to tone and strengthen the body without putting compact weight loads on the skeletal system.
